The American indian is one of the aboriginal
peoples of the Americas. Columbus named them
Indians in 1492 because he believed he had
found not the New World, but a new route to
India. There are around 300,000 American
indians in Canada. They are organized in
the National Indian Brotherhood of Canada.
The United States has over 1.6 million
American indian residence, with almost
900,000 living on or near reservations,
mainly in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah,
Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, Washington, and
North and South Dakota. The population level
is thought to be about the same as at the
time of Columbus, but now includes many
people who are of mixed ancestry. Indians
were made citizens of the USA in 1924.
They were the first users of Tobacco,
and the weed was brought to the Court of
Elizabeth I, after one of his voyages to the
New World, by Sir Walter Raleigh.
