  1. The American indian is one of the aboriginal
  2. peoples of the Americas. Columbus named them
  3. Indians in 1492 because he believed he had 
  4. found not the New World, but a new route to
  5. India. There are around 300,000 American
  6. indians in Canada. They are organized in 
  7. the National Indian Brotherhood of Canada.
  8. The United States has over 1.6 million
  9. American indian residence, with almost 
  10. 900,000 living on or near reservations,
  11. mainly in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, 
  12. Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, Washington, and
  13. North and South Dakota. The population level
  14. is thought to be about the same as at the 
  15. time of Columbus, but now includes many 
  16. people who are of mixed ancestry. Indians 
  17. were made citizens of the USA in 1924.

  20. and the weed was brought to the Court of
  21. Elizabeth I, after one of his voyages to the
  22. New World, by Sir Walter Raleigh.
